Blanchard's vocab

sepulchre- n.- a tomb, grave, or burial place.

physiognomies- n.- 1. the face or countenance, especially when considered as an index to the character. 2. the art of determining character or personal characteristics from the form or features of the body, especially of the face.

augured- v.t.- 1. to divine or predict, as from omens; prognosticate. 2. to serve as an omen or promise of; foreshadow; betoken.

malefactress (female form of malefactor)- n.- 1. a person who violates the law; criminal. 2. person who does evil.

beadle- n.- a parish officer who performs various duties, as keeping order during the service.

ignominy- n.- 1. personal disgrace; dishonor. 2. shameful or dishonorable quality or conduct.

rankle- v.i.- (of feelings, experiences, etc.) to continue to irritate or cause bitter resentment.

contumely- n.- 1. insulting display of contempt in words or actions; contemptuous or humiliating treatment. 2. a humiliating insult

preternatural- adj.- 1. existing or occurring out of the ordinary course of nature; exceptional or abnormal; extraordinary; preternatural powers. 2. being outside of nature; supernatural.

phantasmagoria- n.- 1. a shifting series of phantasms, illusions, or deceptive appearances, as in a dream. 2. a changing scene made up of many elements. 3. an optical illusion produced by a magic lantern or the like in which figures increase or diminish in size, pass into each other, dissolve, etc.

peradventure- adv.- archaic. It may be; maybe; possibly; perhaps.

halberd- n.- a shafted weapon with an axe-like cutting blade, beak, and apical spike, used esp. in 15^th and 16^th centuries.

sagacity- n.- the quality of having or showing acute mental discernment and keen practical sense; shrewdness

exhort- v.t.- to urge, advise, or caution earnestly; admonish urgently.

1. gimme - noun - in golf, the final short putt that a player is not required to take in informal play.
2. contumely - noun - insulting display of contempt in words or actions; contemptuous or humiliating treatment.
3. physiognomies - noun - the art of judging human character from facial features.
4. heterodox - adjective - not in accordance with established or accepted doctrines or opinions, especially in theology; unorthodox.
5. farthingale - noun - a hoop skirt or framework for expanding a woman's skirt, worn in the 16th and 17th centuries.
6. evanescent - adjective - vanishing; facing away; fleeting.
7. ignominy - noun - disgrace; dishonor; public contempt.
8. infinitesmal - adjective - indefinitely or exceeding small; minute.
9. jingoism - noun - the spirit, policy, or practice of jingoes; bellicose chauvinism.
10. Bohemian - noun - a person, as an artist or writer, who lives and acts free of regard for conventional rules and practices.

Yeah, I totally couldn't figure out that whole hyperlinking thing for this one...I'll make another attempt for the next post, however.

Spoor- 1. a track or trail, esp. that of a wild animal pursued as game.

Abomination- 1. anything greatly disliked or abhorred 2. intense aversion or loathing; detestation
