"The King of Torts" Chapters 1-5 When we got our summer reading lists this book jumped out at me as one that I was going to read right away. I knew I was going to read this book because I like the author of it, John Grisham, a lot. His books are very interesting and entertaining, and hopefully this one will be no different. So far it has been pretty good. It started out with a bang. A man named Pumpkin was killed by a man named Tequila Watson. A young laywer named Clay Carter gets assigned to the case. Clay is very heisitant about taking the case, but has no other choice. He assumes it is just another murder that he has seen 1,000 times already. He begins to half-heartedly investigate. As this is going on Clay is having problems with his girlfriend, Rebecca. He hates her parents, especially her dad. At dinner one night he offers him a job that would be much better then the one he has now. Clay does not seem to really want the job but agrees to think it over. I don't think there is any chance that he will take the job. Then I think later on in the book he will meet up with Rebecca's dad again in some way.
King of Torts Chapters 6-11 So far the book is going just about as I expected it to. At first it was a fairly exciting book with quite a bit going on, but not it is getting to be even more entertaining. As I thought, Clay broke up with Rebecca because he did not take the job offered to him by Mr. Vanhorn. Clay's life seemed to be going nowhere. He was working for low pay at a job he did not like, and he had just broke up with his longtime girlfriend. Then, everything changed when a man named Max Pace called him. The next day at lunch Clay fount out that Max was a man hired by large companies to clean up their mistakes. Clay could become a multi-millionair immidiately if he accepted Max's offer. Max was working for an anonymous company who made a drug named Tarvan. This drug would help drug addicts, but in some cases it made its users become violent all of a sudden. Tarvan is believed to be the reason that Tequila Watson committed murder. Clay was very overwhelmed by this offfer. He goes to see his dad for advice, bu this dad is no help at all.
King of Torts Chapters 12-17 The book is going pretty good right now. It is not the best book I have ever read, but it is pretty good. Right now Clay has established his new law firm and is working on the settlements for the Tarvan case. The family of each victim gets $5 million, and Clay gets $15 million from Max Pace if he settles all the cases with no problems. Clay gets the job done without any hitches, and is now a multi-millionaire. He could retire right now and be set for life, but he decides to keep working. Max tells him about a drug for arthritis called Dyloft. Dyloft works very well, but in about five percent of its patients tumours form in their bladder. Max and Clay come up with a plan to find Dyloft users and get a settlement from the maker of Dyloft. If everything goes as planned Clay will make $135 mmillion. Clay begins by finding people who use Dyloft and testing them for tumours. Then he rund TV ads and thousands of Dyloft users call in to be tested. So far everything is going according to Clay's plan, and it looks like he will make a lot more money in the future.
King of Torts Chapters 18-22 I think the book is good. It could be better, but it is good. Right now Clay is still working on the Dyloft case. Instead of working by himself now he has joined forces with another mass tort lawyer named Patton French. I think this will turn out to be a very good move. French is very experienced I think he will help Clay maximize his potential. I think French will help out Clay with the Dyloft case, and later on down the road. French convinces Clay to work with him by flying Clay on his private jet and taking him out to eat at a fancy restaurant. From the beginning French seems to be doing all the right things. Other lawyers around the country have joined in with French and Clay. The company they are suing, Ackerman Labs, agrees on a settlement very quickly thanks in large part to Patton French. Clay makes $106 million, and he still has not settled the cases in which the patients died. Clay had become a very rich man. He tried to call Rebecca back after six months, but she was already gettting married to somebody else.
The book is still okay, but it is not getting any better. The same thing is pretty much happening over and over again. Clay just keeps suing more and more companies and making more and more money. Clay is not afraid of spending his newfound wealth. he buys his dad a new boat, and often rides in private luxury jets. He was becoming increasingly more famous, with articles written about him in major newspapers. He gets a new girlfriend who is a model, but he stills loves Rebecca. He attends Rebecca's wedding uninvited, but gets kicked out. Clay's next lawsuit is against a company that makes a drug called Maxatil. The drug has been proven in a study to cause an increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and strokes. Clay is just as confident about this case as he is the others, and everything starts off the same. That is until he talks to French again. French tells him that he avoided this lawsuit because he does not think that it will work out. This worries Clay a lot. I predict that Clay will have a very tough time with this lawsuit, but in the end he will pull through with a lot of help from French.
King of Torts CH 29-34 In my last post I predicted that that Maxatail case would be successful with the help of French, but after reading this section I would like to change my prediction. I think Clay will lose all of his money. He has not lost his money yet, but the past couple of chapters have made it seem that things are going to take a turn for the worse for Clay. A lot of things do not look like they are pointing in Clay's favor at the moment. First of all, the Maxatail lawsuit is looking worse and worse all the time. He has put millions of dollars into it, and most people are convinced that he will not be able to win, including many other experienced mass tort laywers. Second of all, he is being sued by the people from Dyloft. The people have tumours in their bladder again, and are unsatisfied with their $42 thousand settlement because they could have won millions if they went to court. They are suing Clay for the millions of dollars they should have won. Finally, the FBI is after him for insider trading, and if convicted he will have to serve five years in prison. Clay's law firm is sinking fast, and I think it will sink to the bottim just as fast as it rose to the top.
The King of Torts Chapters 35-End Everything ended just how I said it would in my last post. Clay lost just his money just as fast as he earned it. He became too greedy, and it cost him his fortune. This just shows how harmful greed can be. Clay's firm was going into debt, and the only thing that had a chance to save it was teh Maxatail lawsuit. Clay was banking his entire future on it. Things got even worse for Clay when he was mugged by a couple of men and was hospitilized. While in the hospital he heard good news about the Maxatial case and was optimistic. But, things took a turn for the worse right before Clay was released from the hospital. He found out the Maxatail case would not work out as he had expected, and he would not make any money off of it. His only choice was to file for bankruptcy. He owed money to a lot of people and was being sued left and right. He dumped his model girlfriend and got back with Rebecca after she divorced her husband. They moved out of the United States by themselves where Clay could start over again. I thought the book was pretty good, but I like some of John Grisham's other books better then this one.
Didn't the passage of background information say that Antigone was a victim of Creon's hubris? Some of you are suggesting that Antigone is the tragic hero. Thoughts on that.
