Watchers – Pages 1-66 When I first saw the summer reading list I knew that I would end up reading this book because I heard that it was good from a couple of different people during school. The first part really impressed me and I enjoyed it far more than The Red Badge of Courage. This book is much more action packed and keeps you reading. The beginning was great with the dog leading Travis through the forest while Travis couldn’t quite figure out what he was running from. Then to see how ingenious the dog really is at the end of the section with him getting the beer and forming a question mark is just amazing. I also like this book because it doesn’t just focus on those two characters and leads us into many other lives. We get to read about a very nervous and unconfident young lady in Nora Devon, a criminal mastermind in Vince Nasco, and also a sexual predator in Art Streck all in the same book. This book has started out great and I can’t wait to read more, which I will go do right now.
This section of the book somehow got even better than the previous one and that one was great. We begin to see all of the characters I previously mentioned come together in some way or another and are introduced to a few new characters. These new characters include the Outsider who is described as a beast who is half man and half animal, as well as Lem Johnson, Walt Gaines, and Cliff Soames who are all agents who, in one way or another, are trying to chase down the Outsider and Einstein. I believe that somehow all of these characters are someway connected to the Banodyne Laboratories and this will eventually lead them all to each other. I also believe that Nora and Travis are perfect for each other as both are very shy, lonely, and need someone to be with. They are also warming up to each other with the help of Einstein. He begins to seem even more intelligent than before and is probably smarter than anyone in the book, even though he is a dog. Although Streck is now out of the picture, I believe that Nora is getting in even more danger that she doesn’t know about as Vince Nasco learns more about the dog. Vince is a very greedy person who wants a lot of money and knows that he could get a lot of it if he could capture the dog, and because of this I think that he will come after the dog and eventually have to try to kill Travis and Nora to get Einstein. It should be interesting for me to see if my predictions will come true and can’t wait to continue reading (although it will have to wait because I am going on vacation). Dean Koontz really does a good job of keeping the reader updated on all of the characters and he keeps me guessing on what will happen next.
Watchers – Pages 149-208 The Outsider started to be talked about more in this section. We learn a little more about just how ferocious this beast really is, as he tears animals and even a couple more humans into pieces. We also begin to realize that he doesn’t just kill them, but he also likes to tear out the victims’ eyes and even decapitate them and then place their heads in weird places as if to play tricks on the cops. We also see the other so-called “bad guy,” Vince, learn more about Einstein through Santini and I believe that in the next section we will see him attack Travis, Nora, and Einstein. Nora Devon is continually becoming more involved with the outside world but she still has a very low self-confidence. She does show Travis her paintings, which he believes she could sell they are so good, and even lets Travis talk her into talking with her lawyer. While talking with her lawyer, Nora learns that her Aunt Violet, who despised men, was actually previously married. I predict that this will set Nora free from her aunt's beliefs that all men are evil, and that she will become more open with Travis. I also predict that this will push their relationship to a new level and they will eventually get married.
Watchers – Pages 209-272 In this section I really saw the friendship between Walt and Lem tested as two of Walt’s cops were killed by The Outsider. Walt threatens to tell the media about what is really killing all these people and forces his best friend, Lem, to tell him everything about The Outsider and break his oath of secrecy. Lem realizes that he must and does in fact tell Walt about it. I believe this will strengthen their friendship and Walt will do something with his new knowledge of The Outsider to help save Lem from it. I also found out just how smart both of the escapees from the Banodyne Laboratories are as I read about The Outsider’s den and Einstein's new ability to read, as well as his ability to communicate in a yes-no format. I believe that Einstein’s new ability to read and his ability to respond to yes or no questions will allow him to tell Travis and Nora everything they need to know about him. This could become very critical as both the police and The Outsider continue to gain ground on these three. As for my previous predictions, Vince did not attack the three or even come close to finding them, but I was correct about Nora and Travis getting married as Travis proposed on the last page of the section and Nora said yes.
Watchers – Pages 273-339 This section was by far the most action-packed one yet. It starts off with Travis and Nora coming very close to losing Einstein by taking him to a vet where the veterinarians are told to look for a special marking in the ear that Einstein had. After that, the three were off to Las Vegas where Nora and Travis got married. Then, as they are on their way home, Einstein becomes very frightened and will not let either of the other two inside the house. Travis quickly realizes that The Outsider must be in the house, so he grabs a revolver and silently heads in with Einstein at his side. Once inside, they quickly find Travis’ landlord dead with his eyes torn out and body ripped to shreds. They hesitantly proceed until The Outsider springs upon them but after Travis begins firing, The Outsider retreats and leaves the house. Immediately, Travis realizes that they must leave because if the cops caught them, they would lose Einstein. They have nowhere to turn until they remember Garrison, Nora’s attorney, and quickly go to his house. Garrison immediately helps them, knowing the danger that lies ahead for himself, and provides them with money and a nice get-away car. Travis knows that he must get fake identification and heads for Los Angeles where he finds what he needs. Travis and Nora each get new names, which are Samuel Hyatt and Nora Aimes. Now on the run, they spend their time communicating with Einstein through Scrabble tiles as he can now answer their questions with words, which I think, will help them out immensely. While all of this is happening however, both Vince and Lem Johnson now know that Travis and Nora have the dog and both will now be even closer to finding them and the dog. I can’t wait to read the rest of the book because it just keeps getting more exciting and action-packed as I go on.
Watchers – Pages 340-426 I believe that this section does a great job of preparing us for an amazing ending. It started off with a bang as I found out that Nora is indeed pregnant. They both feel that it is a horrible time to be pregnant considering they know that The Outsider is coming, but decide to have the baby because Nora believes it’s part of their destiny. Right when everything seems to be going great for the three companions, Lem Johnson finally connects Garrison to Nora and Travis. After doing this, Lem immediately has all of Garrison’s phones tapped so they can find out exactly where Einstein is. Garrison, however, realizes that he must immediately warn the three somehow before they call him and is forced to swim, at night while the waters freezing, across part of a lake to get to a phone to warn them of what happened. He does this successfully and keeps Nora, Travis, and Einstein, out of dangers way. After that scare, an even greater one comes about as Einstein becomes very sick with distemper and is forced to be taken to the vet. Einstein can’t move or even bark while being treated there, and is very close to dying, and the last thing on Nora or Travis’ mind is the marking in Einstein’s ear. The vet, Dr. Keene, is a very nice man and is very dedicated to his job because he loves dogs so much. He tells the two that he noticed the marking and that he is ordered to tell the NSA about it, but he does give them a chance to explain. Nora and Travis are forced to tell him everything and amazingly, he feels the same way they do about the dog staying in their hands and out of the government’s for research. He is amazed by Einstein’s uncanny abilities, and offers to help them in any way that he can as the section comes to a close. I believe that this will lead up to a thrilling ending and predict that Vince, The Outsider, and Lem Johnson, will all find Einstein, Nora, and Travis, at the same time to see who can outlast the others and keep, or kill, the dog.
Watchers – Pages 427-483 I really saw all of the main characters come together at the end of this book. As Nora is preparing to leave her regular check-up on the baby, Vince jumps in her car and takes the wheel. He then shoves a gun to her stomach and forces her to drive to her house. Along the way, Vince tells her about his alleged destiny and about how he is immortal which scares Nora even more. Vince tells her that he only wants the dog and that he will kill both Nora and Travis. Nora knows that there is a gun in the glove compartment and finally gets her chance to go for it as they enter the driveway. She snatches the gun and immediately shoots Vince four times in the chest and Nora believes he is dead. She runs over to Travis who is now out of the house with a Uzi machine gun and tells him that she killed him, but just as she tells him this, Vince shoots Travis in the shoulder. Nora is amazed that he is still alive and believes that he must be immortal, although he just had on a bulletproof vest. Vince quickly heads to the front where he is attacked by Einstein and then shot and killed by Travis. The three head back inside relieved that they were now safe although this feeling didn’t last long as The Outsider attacks them no less than ten minutes later. The Outsider viciously attacks Einstein and has the chance to kill him, but for some reason jumps out of the house and just leaves Einstein badly injured. Travis wants The Outsider killed and heads for the barn where he knows he is. Inside the barn, The Outsider forces out words that Travis can barely understand, but once he does understand, he hears The Outsider tell Travis to kill it. Travis does this, more out of vengeance than mercy, and The Outsider is finally dead. Two weeks later, Lem Johnson finally finds them and tells them that they can keep the dog if they just let it roam around in the woods for a week until the NSA will no longer be looking for it. By doing this Lem believes he is helping Travis and Nora and is stunned when Travis grabs him by the collar and begins to yell at him. Travis tells him that The Outsider killed the dog and then Travis killed The Outsider. Lem pretends to believe Travis, but later on Lem told Walt Gaines that he saw dog hair all over his pants and knew that the dog was still alive. This was a great ending to an even better book. This book was so action-packed and exciting the whole time and I could not put down this book. For those reasons, this was probably one of the best books that I have ever read.
Didn't the passage of background information say that Antigone was a victim of Creon's hubris? Some of you are suggesting that Antigone is the tragic hero. Thoughts on that.
