Introduction- Chapter 6

I began to like Elizabeth as soon as she was introduced in the first paragraph of the book. She seemed interesting and mysterious. Beck and Elizabeth seem to be perfect for each other. I immediately knew that this peacefulness couldn’t last. Before the reader even arrives at chapter one Elizabeth is dragged away and a horrified Beck is hit over the head with a baseball bat and sinks to the depths of Lake Charmaine.
Chapter one begins with eight years having passed since Elizabeth’s disappearance. The reader finds that Beck is a doctor. He is a pediatrician that serves the not so wealthy families. In this chapter the reader also meets Shauna. She is one of Beck’s best friends and the partner of Beck’s sister Linda. Shauna is trying her best to distract Beck because the next day is Elizabeth’s and Beck’s anniversary.
When Beck returns to office he receives a mysterious e-mail. The subject line read E.P. + D.B. /////////////////////. These were Beck and Elizabeth’s initials and the twenty-one lines represented the lines they had marked on the tree at Lake Charmaine. The message told Beck to click on the link at Kiss Time. Kiss Time was when they kissed for the first time twenty-one years ago at six-fifteen P.M.
When Beck arrived home that day he was in for another surprise. The Sheriff called to tell him that two bodies were found near his grandfathers’ property by Lake Charmaine. The Sheriff found with the bodies a baseball bat with Beck’s blood on it.
The clock finally rolls around to six-fifteen. Beck clicks on the once broken link and a street camera appeared. A woman appeared in the middle of the camera and looked up at Beck. He knew immediately that it was Elizabeth. She said “I’m sorry” into the camera and then disappeared.

Chapters 7-13

In chapter seven the Scope family is introduced. Griffin Scope seems to be rather puzzling. He is a billionaire but how did he just seem to multiply his already considerable wealth? What happened to his son Brandon? Who was Brandon? All of these questions were running through my head as I read this section. The biggest question of all: Why did Griffin Scope want Elizabeth dead? How on earth could she even be part of Brandon Scope’s death especially since the family’s had so many connections with each other.
Eric Wu fascinates me. He is probably one of the strangest characters in the whole book thus far. What would inspire him to achieve such a life’s purpose. Why would he train so hard? Does he enjoy killing? I wonder what has happened in his past to make him such a man. He also frightens me. No one has a chance against him. I just hope that Beck can stay out of his iron death grasp.
The drama and mystery in the book is really heating up. I really enjoy Coben’s writing style. He uses a lot of similes to help the reader understand different moods in the novel. The novel is modern day and he uses props for example the Brady Bunch to help the reader understand what the characters are experiencing.

Chapters 14-20

Beck has just discovered the mysterious photographs of Elizabeth’s injuries. I was astonished. What could she have been mixed up in. She led to Beck and all of her friends to believe that she had just been in a car accident. I could not believe that Elizabeth had lied to Beck. They seemed so close. Beck is also curious about how KillRoy played into all of this. KillRoy was the man who had killed Elizabeth. Or so Beck believes. Beck decides that he must meet this man and talk to him about Elizabeth.
Beck concurs he must start investigating the case himself. He knows that he cannot tell anyone about what he has seen. That night he goes through Elizabeth’s planner. He found one phone number with the initials PF beside it. He decided to check it out. The phone number ended up belonging to Peter Flannery who was an attorney. Beck had no idea why Elizabeth would have hired an attorney. He made an appointment to meet with Peter Flannery the next day.
While Beck is investigating the police are conducting an investigation of their own. They believe that Beck might have killed Elizabeth. It seems that everyone is against Beck now. No one would even believe him if he told them that he saw Elizabeth. I believe that the climax in the story is going come to a head. There are many different angles in this novel and everyone believes something different about the fate of Elizabeth.

Chapters 21-27

Beck knows that it is up to him to discover Elizabeth. He decides to visit the place where her body was found. He had avoided this place for years. I would have too. It would have brought back so many horrible memories. Beck also decides to visit the coroners office where Elizabeth’s body was taken. This is a very smart move. After attending a forensics and crime scene investigation camp this summer I have become conscious of how important autopsy reports are.
The book really starts to pick up at this point. When Beck arrives at the coroner’s office the coroner that inspected Elizabeth’s body is very wary to reveal any information. He sends Beck to a place where her file is stored because it has been several years since her murder. When Beck arrives he discovers that all of the pictures from her file are missing. I could not believe this. Someone had obviously tampered with the file and stolen the pictures. Beck, however, is not to be stopped. He reads the description of Elizabeth. Her height and weight that were recorded in the file were not accurate of the Elizabeth that he knew!

Chapters: 28-34

Beck has finally found someone who believes that Elizabeth could be alive and is willing to help him. His name is Tyrese and he is very grateful to Beck for saving his son when he was only a baby. Beck is planning to meet Elizabeth and Tyrese is going to ensure his safety.
The reader finally finds that Elizabeth is alive! She had been hiding outside of the country. She has many different disguises. For her meeting with Beck she would be wearing a blonde wig with dark roots, glasses, and implants that changed the shape of her face. She had plane tickets for herself and Beck to fly to London together.
When she arrives to the place where she is to meet Beck she finds that he has already arrived. She also sees that Beck is being followed. She resigns herself to the fact that she is not going to be able to reunite with her husband. For her safety and for Beck’s she knows that she must leave for London without him.

Chapters: 35-41

The reader now sees that Griffin Scope is not really who he appears to be. He has a very dark side; a murderous side. At a charity event that he and his wife are having for their deceased son, Brandon, Griffin meets with one of his hit men. His name is Larry Gandle. They discuss the where abouts of Beck. They then confer about whether they believe Elizabeth to still be alive. Griffin is animate that both Beck and Elizabeth must be killed.
In the meantime, Detective Carlson is starting to discover some loose ends concerning the case. He goes to visit Hoyt Parker who is Elizabeth’s father. Hoyt had been the one to identify Elizabeth’s body at the coroner’s office. Detective Carlson wanted to question Hoyt about that day. He alerted Hoyt to the fact that the pictures from the autopsy were missing. Hoyt claimed he knew nothing about it but Carlson doesn’t believe this. At the end of this section a startling development occurs. The gun that was found in Elizabeth’s safety deposit box under the false alias, Sarah Goodhart, was the same gun that killed Brandon Scope. The gun belonged to Beck.

Chapters 42-End

Elizabeth has finally arranged a place where she can meet Beck. They are going to meet at Lake Charmaine where she was abducted twelve years ago. Beck arrived at the tree where they had carved their initials and saw that eight new lines had been carved into the tree. Then Elizabeth appeared behind him. Even as Beck embraced Elizabeth he knew that their moment of bliss could not last.
Elizabeth and Beck finally left to go see Hoyt; Elizabeth’s father. Hoyt, as it turns out, had all the answers. Griffin Scope believed that Elizabeth had killed his son Brandon. Hoyt realized that Griffin would stop at nothing to see Elizabeth dead. He knew that Griffin was sending two thugs to kill her. Hoyt decided to intervene. He and his brother abducted Elizabeth at Lake Charmaine themselves. They were the ones who hit Beck over the head with the baseball bat. They had convinced Elizabeth that for her safety she must go into hiding. She believed Beck to be dead. They agreed to tell no one. Hoyt and his brother killed the two thugs that were sent to kill Elizabeth.
However, Hoyt was trying to cover up an even bigger predicament. He was killing two birds with one stone. Hoyt knew that Elizabeth was investigating Brandon Scope’s prostitution and drug deals. He was afraid she would stumble upon something even bigger. The death of Beck’s father. Beck’s father worked closely with Brandon Scopes and he came to realize what a monster Brandon really was. His father told Hoyt who was a police officer and close friend about Brandon. Hoyt told the Scopes and Beck’s father was promptly murdered.
Hoyt finally forced Beck into his car and drove him to meet Griffin Scope and the men who worked for him. Hoyt had all the information that Beck’s father and Elizabeth had on Brandon. He told Griffin that Beck had killed Brandon and not Elizabeth. Griffin sent one of his men, Eric Wu, to take the papers from Hoyt. Wu instinctively kicked Hoyt in the rib cage sending Hoyt sprawling to the ground. Griffin then walked over to Hoyt holding a tape recorder. He replayed the conversation that had just taken place between Beck and Hoyt in the house and in the car. He replayed the part where Hoyt admitted to murdering Brandon Scope.
Beck immediately knew what Hoyt had done. Hoyt had known that his car and house had been bugged. He wanted them to hear that he had killed Brandon. He was sacrificing himself for Elizabeth and Beck. Beck realized that when Hoyt patted him down looking for a wire that he had indeed felt it. He wanted the police to hear the whole conversation as well. Hoyt pulled out his gun and killed Griffin Scope and them himself before the police helicopters even reached the ground.
You may be wondering who really killed Brandon Scope. David Beck killed Brandon Scope in self defense. Brandon had snuck into the Beck’s home intending to kill Beck and Elizabeth. In the end, Beck and Elizabeth were reunited and everything ended happily.
