The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 1-3 I usually don't like classic books, but when I was looking at our list for this summer this book caught my eye. It seemed like it might be a good book because it is about something exciting, war. I was hoping that I would like it, even though it was a classic book, but once I read the first page I knew it was going to be a terrible book. It is just as bad, if not worse, then most other classic books. I have trouble concentrating while reading it, and I have to take breaks every couple of pages. So far, not a whole lot has happened. A young man has enlisted in the army, against his mother's wishes. He is very nervous about fighting, and wonders if he will be able to do it, or if he will be a coward and run away. They finally fight at the end of this chapter, but it is not very exciting. Hopefully the book will get better as it goes, but I think it will be this bad all the way through.
The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 4-6 The book is still not very good, but it is a little bit better then it was before. Before I had to put the book down after every page I read, but now I can actually read whole chapters at a time. Hopefully it continues to get even better as it progresses. The young soldier is fighting now. At first he freezes up and does not know what to do, but eventually he starts fighting. He sees some of his fellow soldiers get shot, but he does not get shot. The enemy retreats, and the young soldier thinks that they have won the battle. However, he is wrong and the enemy comes back again. This time he turns into a coward and instead of fighting he runs away. I thought that he might run away during his first battle, but after he made it through that I thought he would be fine. I was wrong though, and he ran away after the first battle. The book is not very good, but it is getting better as it goes. I think the young soldier will end up getting killed in the end because he is so scared and seems to make bad descions when put in pressure situations.
The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 7-9 The book is still continuing to get better. It started off absolutely terrible, but as it has been going it has gotten better. I will now admit that it is not bad. It still isn't good, but it isn't bad. After the young soldier ran from the battle he found out that they had in fact won the battle. He was too embarassed to go back with the other soldiers again, so he ran away into the woods. While there he tried to justifty his running away. He told himself that he was smarter then the other soldiers, and ran away instead of just standing there and letting himself get killed. After walking in the woods for awhile he hears a battle taking place, and goes towards it. When he gets there he sees a bunch of wounded soldiers walking away from the battle, and he joins them. After some time he sees a soldier that he had fought with earlier. He walks with him for a little bit, but the man has fatal wounds, and very soon he leaves the trail and dies.
The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 10-12 This section was okay, but it was not as good as the last section of the book. After the young soldier watched Jim Conklin die he walks with another soldier with tattered clothes. While walking the man with tattered clothes asks the young soldier what happened to him. Since nothing is wrong with him this makes the young soldier mad and he leaves the other soldier. When he leaves he accidentally walks into a battle. The army was retreating, and the young soldier tries to talk to one of the soldiers. He grabs him by the arm, but the other soldier says let me go, and hits him with his rifle. This injures the young soldier, and he stumbles along for awhile. He struggles to the point where he thinks about stopping right where he is to sleep, until he meets up with a nice man who helps him along. I think that there is a very good chance that the young soldier would have died if it had not been for the man who helped. His head injury was serious, and I think he needed medical attention quickly.
The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 13-15 In this part of the book the youth meets back up with his regiment. Everyone is excited to see the youth, Henry. He tells them that he got separated from the regiment, and while he was fighting he got shot in the head. This is a lie because Henry actually ran away from the regiment, and was hit on the head by a rifle, not shot by the enemy. However, his fellow soldiers believe every word he says. They tell him that many soldiers from the regiment that they thought were dead keep coming back, just like Henry. The soldiers are very happy to see him, and help him with his injury. He goes to sleep, still feeling the affects of the head injury. When he wakes up in the morning Henry still does not feel great, but he will be fine. The other soldiers ask for details of his fighting now that he is feeling better. Henry did not fight, so he changed the subject and told them that Jim Conklin had died. Henry managed to get away with being a coward and saved his reputation. He now has a second chance to prove himself as a worthy soldier, and hopefully this time he will capitalize, and not run away like a coward.
The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 16-20 In this section of the book Henry gets his chance to fight again, and this time he does not run away. In fact, he does the complete opposite and fights with courage. He is so caught up in his fighting that he does not realize the enemy is gone until he hears another soldier laughing at him. All the other soldiers are extremely impressed with his bravery, and one soldier even says that if they had 10,000 soldiers like Henry they would win the war in a week. Then, while they are resting Henry goes to find water and overhears a high ranking soldier say that the only regiment he does not need is Henry's, and that he expects most of Henry's regiment to die soon. Henry does not tell the rest of his regiment this, and they go to battle anyways. They lose the fight in the beginning, but at the end they manage to force the enemy to retreat and win the battle.
The Red Badge of Courage Chapters 21-24 In this final section of the book not a whole lot happens. It is a pretty dull ending. First, Henry's regiment is made fun of by soldiers from another regiment. This makes all of them, including Henry very mad because they thought they had done a good job. But, Henry quickly forgets about this when a couple of men come up to Henry and tell him that the colonel thinks that he and Wilson are the best fighters in the entire regiment. Henry is extremely pleased to hear this, but tries to hide his emotions. Then they fight the final battle of the novel, and they manage to capture the flag of the enemy. The entire regiment celebrates. After the battle Henry walks back towards the river and Henry's mind undergoes a change. In my opinion this was not a good book at all. It was very boring and hard to read. It probably isn't the worst book I have ever read, but it is pretty close.
Didn't the passage of background information say that Antigone was a victim of Creon's hubris? Some of you are suggesting that Antigone is the tragic hero. Thoughts on that.
