This story starts out with Dr. David Beck remembering the night his wife Elizabeth was taken. She was abducted at Lake Charmaine while they were there to do their anniversary ritual. He obviously puts much thought into this night and blames himself for all of it. He is very easy to relate to so far it feels like he’s really talking to you instead of just telling a story. It is now eight years later closing in on the anniversary of he and his wife’s wedding. He recieves a mysterious email from an unknown person referring to events in his past which involve his wife. As he clicks the link in the email it comes up with an error message. Later he realizes a time is specified in the email at which he has to click the link, by doing so he is directed to a street cam video, in it is his supposivly dead wife. Coben goes on to talk about Vic Letty, a con artist who has just pulled off his biggest job, blackmailing Randall Scope. After picking up the money at a safety deposit box, he goes home to find to armed men in his apartment. Obviously from the Scope family, the tortore and kill him. After seeing his wife on the computer Beck is at the very least a bit unstable. He then finds out he is going to see his in-laws later that day, how can he do that thinking everything he thought he knew is a lie. He however complies and upon getting there questions about the identification of Elizabeth, and the father insists that he is possitive it was his daughter on that autopsy table.
This section of the books starts with Larry Gandle, a hit man for Griffin Scope talking to Mr. Scope saying that the two men who were hired to abduct Elizabeth were found dead on Lake Charmaine. The bodies were old at least five years, so this raises many questions of how the were killed. Scope tells Gandle to bury this incident, not caring who gets buried along with it Gandle agrees. Later on Beck is talking to his sister in law, Shauna, he tells her about the mysterious email and how he thinks Elizabeth is still alive. She doesn’t react to much, she handles it very rationally. Next Larry Gandle and Eric Wu, Scopes to hit men, are discussing the emails as well. They are searching for meaning when they realize who the emailer can possibly be. Unfortately there is no way how to confirm their theory. However, it is revealed that they have tracing devices all over Beck’s house and office. The next day, Beck is stopped by the local authorities and FBI. They tell him that they have new evidence regarding his wife’s investigation. The only piece of evidence they show however are pictures of a beaten Elizabeth. They then tell Beck he is now suspected as his wife’s murderer. Beck tells them he wants a lawyer. When Hester Crimstein, a big time lawyer, comes into the room, she immediatly gets Beck released and takes him away. Then she and Beck talk about the discussions that took place. This next chapter is one the weirdest chapters in the book, but the reader has to conclude that it is one of the most significant. It describes a man who has been hiding from the law at Lake Charmaine. How he is the real life boogeyman in the woods. When Beck returns to his clinic he meets with a friend, Tyrese, whom he helped out many years ago and since Tyrese has been trying to pay him back. After talking with him he calls his wife’s best friend, who happens to be a photographer to question about th pictures he was questioned with. Next the FBI have arrived at Elizabeth Beck’s childhood home to qeustion her parents. They show the pictures that they used to qeustion Beck, saying that they suspect him beating and killing their daughter. Later on Beck goes home to look through Elizabeth’s old stuff to see if he can find anything that will help him understand what is going on. He finds in her address book the intials P F. He calls the number and learns it is the office of Peter Flannery attorney at law. In Beck’s words, an abulance chaser.
In Chapter 15 agent Carlson, explains to Hoyt Parker fully why they think Beck killed his wife. Hoyt remains very borderline doing the whole discussion, at some points he defends Beck while at others he condemns him. Larry Gandle and Eric Wu are reviewing Beck’s activities that day and see that he has contacted the photographer Rebecca, Peter Flannery, and KillRoy, his wifes suspected killer. Beck meets Shauna at a business building later, here she shows him an old friend who works with computers. He shows Beck digital photography, which can make something look real when it isn’t. Such as his wife on the computer screen. This is what Shauna thinks happened to Beck, the feds sent the emails to drive him mad. He just cannot accept that this can be true. Larry Gandle and Eric Wu were setting up to torture and kill Rebecca, when Eric like Beck gets on his computer to receive the next email. However both are disappointed when the account never gets activated. Shauna who is with Beck tries convincing him again that it is all just a mind game. As they are checking the website, Rebecca arrives. She is thinking about Beck’s coming to see her and the “car accident” questioning. Until she walks into the room and hears in the darkness, Larry Gandle’s voice asking where Elizabeth is. Beck takes his dog for a walk later to clear his head, and while walking he realizes the email was a code that he had to use to receive the next one. He does so at a nearby Kinkos. In the email he finds details on a meeting place between him and his wife. In the mean time, after torturing her and finding out nothing Rebecca is killed by Gandle. The next morning Beck drives to the county where Elizabeth was found and analyzed. He asks the doctor if her father could identify her immediately or if it took time. Struck by this weird question the doctor does not know the answer and leaves, but not before Beck requests the file of his wife. While investigating Rebecca murder Beck becomes a suspect in it as well. They go to his house with a warrant where they find a pair of gloves, and the murder weapon. Awestruck by the evidence it is apparent the officer starts questioning things.
Here Beck arrives at the hospital and meets Tyrese, he explains his relationship with this man of how he helped prove that Tyrese was not guilty when he was being accused of abusing his son. Next we go to the FBI and how they are talking about the solid case they have against Beck, with the gun, gloves, and his meeting Rebecca earlier that day as evidence. After discussing this with fellow agents they agree to give Hester, Becks attorney a “courtesy call”, to get her client to surrender. Hester give Beck the heads up that he will be taken into custody within the hour. Being only four hours away this could interfere with his meeting this mystery person. He asks about bail which at best is way past the meet time. This in his mind gives him one option, to run. When he arrives at the clinic and see officers he flees the opposite way. He dodges many officers until one confronts him and Beck assaults him and sprints away. After continuing the chase a bit longer Beck calls the only one he can think of, Tyrese. Almost exactly when Tyrese pulls up to pick up Beck he hears gunfire and then people running down the street yelling about a white man with a gun. They take him to their drug house where he is able to change. After changing Tyrese talks to Beck about being the inheriter of his will to help TJ, his son if Tyrese were to die. They come to no agreement but Beck seems very relucant about it. Agent Carlson seems like the only officer who still has hope that he is inocent. He starts questioning all the holes in the investigation. Also another item is revealed of what was in the safety deposit box created by Elizabeth Beck. Stephen Beck’s gun, because he is David Beck’s deceased father the gun belongs to David, so why did his wife have it. He also requests the autopsy file David wanted to view before he was wanted. Before Beck is dropped off at the park, the reader reads about a woman in a hotel near that same park. This woman is almost unarguably Elizabeth Beck. Just as Beck arrives so does Larry Gandle, and Eric Wu. A man, also associated with Gandle, had followed Beck the previous night took many precautions to make sure he was in the booth exactly next to Beck when he opened his email. As the woman who has now been confirmed to be Elizabeth Beck arrives, she first surveys the scene and notices the van parked very near Beck, with a paint company logo on its side. After dialing the number given on the logo she realizes Beck was followed and knows she has to leave. With much difficulty she gets a cab and requests to be taken to JFK international airport.
After many hours sitting on the same bench in Washington park Beck decides Elizabeth is not coming, but is possitive that she is the one behind the emails. As he walks across to leave Eric Wu comes behind him and grabs his shoulder making him stop and get to his knees. Gandle pulls the car around and Beck is thrown in as they are questioning Beck and stop at a red light Tyrese and Brutus appear with weapons and get Beck out of there. Beck finally gets a chance to meet with Peter Flannery the man who his wife met before her death. He insists on finding out what it was that she came to him for. It turns out she came to give an alibi for a Mr. Gonzalez accused of murdering Brandon Scope. Her alibi for him was that he was with her that night, because they had been sleeping together for two months. Meanwhile, Agent Carlson is investigating the autopsy file for Elizabeth closer. He finds nothing very important apart from some evidence that would show that KillRoy probably did not kill her. Next Beck pays a visit to Mr Gonzalez, he asks if the alibi is true, at first he says yes thinking that it was a trick, but later he says that he just went along with it to be set free. When Elizabeth gets to the airport, she has every intention of boarding the plane, but while she is waiting she realizes what she has caused by coming back, the killing of Rebecca, possibly Beck, and putting her own family in danger. She knows she cannot leave and let them sort through the problems she created. She leaves the airport leaving the agents who were waiting at her terminal for her and David. Agent Carlson next meets with Shauna to find out anything new from the file, he shows it to her and like he also saw there were no photos. However she sees the height and weight and it is obvious that they do not fit, she does not tell Carlson of this. After this encounter he gives Hoyt Parker a visit to talk about his daughter. When Carlson gives reasons why it couldn’t have been killRoy who killed Elizabeth, he counters with believable events that could have transpired apart from what Carlson thinks.
At the begining of these chapters, Hester has called all the attorneys and officials to a conference to reveal evidence that proves that he did not kill Rebecca. This evidence revolves around Chloe, Beck’s dog. When Beck went to Kinko’s he brought his dog in causing comotions causing many people to remember him that night, which was about the time Rebecca was being killed. Beck just got off the phone with Shauna and she told him that she needed to talk to him immediatly so he plans to go to her house. Tyrese is very leery about letting Beck go alone so he says that Brutus and he will follow him until its over. Furthermore the gun that belonged to Beck’s dad is a match in the gun that was used to kill Brandon Scope. After talking to Shauna when he is leaving Beck meets with Carlson who questions him about the gun, and Peter Flannery. Before he leaves Beck asks for two hours then he will turn himself in. When Shauna gets to work she gets a letter that just reads Shauna. Inside is a white business type card, which reads go to the restroom. She does and when she gets there Elizabeth is standing there also. She tells her to tell Beck to meet her at Dolphin tonight. Beck then goes to ask Hoyt about the missing pictures in the autopsy file. When he gets there Hoyt aims a gun at him when he enters. After patting him down, Hoyt explains about what is happening. How he saved Elizabeth and him eight years ago, when Scope’s men were sent to kill them, he killed them first. He then convinced Elizabeth that she needed to leave which she did thinking Beck had been killed. He is also told this all centers around Brandon Scope’s murder which Elizabeth allegedly did, but Beck doesn’t believe that. Lastly because Hoyt is a cop he has ascess to dead bodies, he and his brother found one that resemble Elizabeth and made it look like she had been killed by KillRoy. After hearing all this Beck leaves. Gandle and Wu have now taken Tyrese’s family hostage. Beck has seperated from Tyrese now, and is investigating his father’s death which he now knows was murder by the Scope family, for coming to close to revealing the truth about Brandon Scope. Tyrese is called and is told they have his family.
In this last section of the book, Beck is back at Lake Charmaine, for dolphin is one of the cabins in the woods near the lake. As he is walking there he meets Jeremiah the man hiding in the wood, Jeremiah expalins how he saved Beck that night and uncovered the bodies for officials to find. After more walking Beck see her, his “dead” wife, Elizabeth. As he holds her in his arms his phone rings its’ Tyrese about TJ. To get TJ released Beck goes to Hoyt Parker, a man who he trusted but now knows is working for Griffin Scope. He tells him to tell them to release the boy and he’ll go to them. They eventually release TJ. As they are driving to Scope’s estate. Hoyt talks about all the things that Beck is questioning about. Including what all started this, the murder of Brandon Scope. Hoyt confesses it was him. He also says he is putting an end to everything tonight and holds an envelope up including all the investigations of Stephen Beck, and Elizabeth, which he plans to give to Scope. When the arrive at the stables, Hoyt pats Beck down for a wire, then they get out the car. As Hoyt explains to Griffin how everything is in this envelope, and Beck is the murderer, Griffin sends Eric Wu to retrieve the incriminating material. After receiving it Wu disarms Hoyt, and Griffin replays the conversation in the car where Hoyt admits killing Brandon. Beck now realizes that he is not the fall man, Hoyt is. Before he can react Hoyt shoots Griffin, and then himself. Because Hoyt patted Beck for a wire, no one bothered checking so the FBI arrive simitaniously. Hoyt knew that his car was wired that was why he rushed to it when Beck arrived, he put all the guilt on himself to end it that night, because he knew the FBI were listening when he felt the wire on Beck he admitted the murder because penalties cannot be put on a dead man. However the real murderer is Beck, he is the one who shot Brandon, he tells Elizabeth this and she says she’s always known. They are now together again and live happily ever after.
Didn't the passage of background information say that Antigone was a victim of Creon's hubris? Some of you are suggesting that Antigone is the tragic hero. Thoughts on that.
